I've always found Steve Irwin a bit cringeworthy - in my opinion (and in the opinion of some other Australians), he tries so hard to come across as "genuinely Aussie" that he's actually a gross cariacture of rural folk, and from an image point of view, does our country no favours. (I do respect the animal conservation work he's done, however.) But there really isn't any excuse for something as stupid as this. A month-old infant and a chicken would look the same to a crocodile.
