Watching "Encino Man" the other night (yes, on purpose; I didn't just catch it on late-nite TV) I was reminded of my interest in Sacred Reich. I can't really find a lot about them online, but there are lyrics available. They're really quite interesting and even today still politically relevant. Perhaps even ironically, considering that "The American Way" was written in 1990 while Bush Sr. was in office. Likewise, the lyrics of "Surf Nicaragua" could have been written in the past week about anything from the past two years - "You fight for democracy/And the "American Way"/But you're not in your country".
My political opinions are probably null and void because I'm not an American citizen and I don't have the right to vote here yet, but dammit, I'm going to have them and express them and damn the man. I believe it is possible to do all of the following at the same time: be an American citizen (or person married to an American citizen and living in the US), support the troops being sent overseas, question the real motives for war, question the current administration, mock the President, think that subsidised health care is a good idea, and be a good person. According to pundits like Ann Coulter this sort of behaviour should result in having your rights rescinded and a decorative "traitor" tattoo applied to your forehead. When did "liberalism" become a dirty word, Sean Hannity?*
I don't know where this is going. I fully admit that my knowledge of modern politics in the US is not up to snuff and I am trying to find more information as I go along, feeling my way through spin and slant (as I nudge my husband towards remembering to register to vote this year, since his vote will really be speaking for us both). I just know how I feel and understand that my country of origin - where healthcare is still inexpensive (for now - Mr. Howard, with all due respect, I'd like you to know that if you screw with Medicare while you're still PM, I'm going to come over there and administer the most violent wedgie known to mankind) and adults of voting age face fines for not going to the ballot booth - has influenced my political leaning. I am for freedom and justice but what the Bush, Jr. administration has done in the past four years doesn't really look anything like those.
*via Lying Media Bastards. With a P.S. to Mr. Hannity - the Greek and Latin root "liber" or "liver" means "free" and leads to the following words: liberty, liberal, liberalise, liberalism, and deliverance. (Thankyou, smart people with an interest in language!)
