spearmint-flavoured slivers of life

15.11.98

I watch them all, shuffling through the midway, aimlessly visiting stalls and booths, indulging in cheesy novelty items and attempting the little games which offer small prizes in return for not very much effort at all. Girls giggle and drag their boyfriends to each attraction, clutching soft-toys and eating fairy-floss. People from all walks of life are here... the young, the old, the downhearted, the cheerful. Small children cry and teenagers lounge around, acting as though this fair is their playground and no-one elses. I watch from the safety of an enclosed caravan, selling miscellaneous crap to the masses, observing, wondering... spooked by an Asian girl wearing bright blue contact lenses, charmed by the little girl who expresses untainted wisdom. Perhaps my three hours weren't wasted at all.
